Obituary for
James Vincent Salerno
James Vincent Salerno, a Fishkill resident since 2005 and formerly of Yonkers, died at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie on Friday, February 12, 2016. He was 86.
Son of the late Frank and Jenny (Zampetti) Salerno, he was born in Peekskill on July 8, 1929. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1947 and served during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged in 1952. After returning from service, he enrolled in college and graduated from Adelphi University. Jim was a chemist and worked for Stella Doro Biscuit Co. in the Bronx for 35 years.
He was a very active member of many civic organizations, including the Italian City Club and Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks in Yonkers, the Knights of Columbus St. Mary’s Council #4065 in Fishkill, and always contributed time and service to Disabled American Veterans. He was a parishioner at St. Mary, Mother of the Church in Fishkill. Jim was also a skilled bridge player and competed in many events and tournaments.
On August 29, 1954, he married Louise Dippolito at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Yonkers. Mrs. Salerno survives at home.
Additional survivors include two sons, George Salerno of Fishkill and Jim Salerno, Jr. of Brewster; a daughter, Lynda Weber & her husband Alan of Simsbury, CT; two grandsons, Robert and Matthew Weber; two sisters, Julia Natarelli of West Haven, CT and Carmella DelBene of Fishkill; and many nieces, nephews, and other loving relatives & friends.
He was preceded in death by a brother, George Salerno, who was killed in service during World War II; and his daughter-in-law, Karen Salerno, in 2015.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff at Vassar Brothers Medical Center for the care and compassion they gave Jim throughout his final hours. They would like to express special gratitude to Dr. Suleman Khawaja and nurses Karen & Michele.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, February 14 at the McHoul Funeral Home of Fishkill, Inc., 1089 Main Street, Fishkill. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on Monday, February 15 at St. Mary, Mother of the Church, 106 Jackson Street, Fishkill. Entombment will be on Tuesday at 10am at Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale.
