My father, Charles Lewis, was Aunt Sally's brother and oldest sibling. He had a joke after every time we had a family get together. After dinner he would always ask, "Where's the Baked Alaska?" Everyone would laugh and as a young child I didn't know what that was. But because everyone laughed, I knew it was good.
On one occasion, we had dinner with Aunt Sally and Uncle Dick in their little apartment above a storefront on Main Street in Fishkill, NY. As usual, Dad asked, "Where's the baked alaska?" As everyone laughed, Aunt Sally got up, went to the kitchen and returned with the lovely confection of sponge cake and ice cream covered with meringue. Dad was so surprised. It was delicious! I don't think I have ever had it since.
