Obituary for John Scalzo

Hyde Park - John Scalzo, devoted son, husband and father. John departed this Earth on June 4, 2022. Born on June 1, 1960 in Poughkeepsie, he was the beloved son of Ralph J. Scalzo and June Medio Scalzo. John graduated from Roy C. Ketcham High School in 1978. He received his Associates Degree with honors from Dutchess Community College. On August 10, 1991, at St. Mary’s Church in Wappingers, he married the love of his life Cindy Scalzo and they celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary last August.

Cindy writes, “…What can I say about my husband…well that could fill MANY pages! We met while we were both working at Grand Union in Wappingers. Our first date was August 10, 1985. We got married exactly six years later, on August 10, 1991. Fifteen years later, God gave us the greatest blessing of our lives…our son, Jack. He has brought so much joy to our lives and the three of us have had such an especially close bond. John and Jack are bookends! They are very much alike!...So many interests shared…so many happy memories. John was always my rock, my heart and soul, my very best friend…my soulmate. Even through all of life’s challenges…and there have been MANY, our love and devotion to each other remained solid. Our motto was and always will be “Love of my life…Light of my world…” “Our hearts go with you John.”

John had SO many interests…he was a 3rd generation Yankees fan, a NY Rangers fan, and he and his dad were devoted Los Angeles Rams fans. John loved to study dinosaur paleontology. He was a comic book collector for years. He also was such an avid reader; his interests ranging from science fiction to world history. He was definitely a history buff. The Civil War and World War II interested him the most. He also knew TANKS and could easily identify them, even from other countries. John enjoyed exploring East Coast states. John enjoyed music. His favorite bands were Led Zeppelin and The Who. In his younger days, John played softball for several years. He was so proud to be on the ORIGINAL Renegades and thoroughly enjoyed reliving those memories with his closest friends.

John and Jack had so many interests that they shared together. John enjoyed sharing some of his childhood favorite shows with Jack, including: Thunderbirds, Astro Boy, the Eighth Man, Gigantor and Johnny Quest. In turn, Jack also enjoyed sharing some of his favorite childhood shows with John, including Dragon Ball Super, Jo Jo’s Bizarre Adventures, and Adventure Time. They enjoyed watching other shows together such as, the Honeymooners, video clips of Saturday Night Live, Sponge Bob and more recently, Doctor Who. They would crack up over the online web series Ed’s World and various memes they found. They enjoyed playing games on Jack’s Nintendo Switch. They played Super Smash Bros. and Street Fighter. They loved brainstorming ideas of ways to combine fictional characters and storylines from different tv shows and video games.

Overall, John was a homebody. He was happiest being at home and living life with Cindy and Jack.
