Obituary for Mathilda A. "Tillie" Hayward

Mathilda A. “Tillie” Hayward, 95, a lifelong area resident, died peacefully on December 26, 2018 at her home.

Born in Dutchess Junction on December 5, 1923, she was the daughter of Michael and Margaret (Hajj) Shebanie. Tillie graduated from the Dutchess Junction Elementary School and Beacon High School, and then attended Shedden’s School of Beauty. She owned and operated Tillie’s Beauty Salon in Beacon for 12 years, and then went on to work at several other local salons.

Tillie was a parishioner of St. Mary, Mother of the Church, and a member of the Catholic Women’s Club. She was also a member of the Dutchess Junction Fire Department Ladies’ Auxiliary and the Fishkill Historical Society Birthday Women’s Club. Tillie enjoyed crocheting and playing cards on Mondays with her friends.

On May 21, 1961 in Fishkill, Tillie married Wilbert Hayward who predeceased her. She is survived by her stepchildren and their spouses, Thomas and Patty of CA, and Florence and Len of Peekskill; her step-grandchildren, Thomas, Danielle and Jenna; her brother, John Shebanie; her sister-in-law, Dorothy Thomson and husband Jack; and several nieces and nephews from the Shebanie and Wiand families. Tillie was predeceased by her sister Katherine Wiand; and brothers Michael and Joseph Shebanie.

The family would like to acknowledge the staff of Mid Hudson Regional Home Care and especially home aide Emelia, and the staff of Hudson Valley Hospice and especially nurse Jolene and aide Petal for the loving care of Tillie and for helping her to stay in her home; and to neighbors Sharon and Gary for always being there for her.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at 10am at St. Mary, Mother of the Church, 106 Jackson Street, Fishkill followed by interment in St. Joachim’s Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the McHoul Funeral Home of Fishkill, Inc.
